Fishing, seaweed farming, and trading are the major economic preoccupation of the Sama people who predominate in this municipality. Majority of the poor families depend on what their husbands/sons/daughters earned in Malaysia. Sabah is usually the place to go, especially during having times. Banca, pump boat, and motor launch are the transportation used by the local people to cross the sea to find their living in other islands.
